BELLES AUDIO: Brum draw does not phase us

Gordon Staniforth has cited the example of giantkillers Wigan Athletic as inspiration for Belles’ own FA Cup glory.

The Belles have been drawn away to FAWSL1 side Birmingham City in the fifth round of the FA Women’s Cup following their 4-1 victory over Copsewood Coventry on Sunday.

And Staniforth is keen to look to the men’s game for inspiration ahead of next month’s difficult-looking tie.

“You only have to look at what Wigan Athletic achieved last year [1-0 win against Manchester City in the final] to know that any team can win the FA Cup,” he said.

“We’re one step closer to the trophy with a couple of rounds to go and then the final.

“I’ll take that.”

Captain Leandra Little gave Doncaster the perfect start against lower league opposition Copsewood with a third minute opener.

Beth England struck the second, tapping home after Little’s header came back off the post.

Belles were given a fright when Leah Williams quickly reduced the deficit for the visitors.

But second half strikes from Jess Sigsworth and England made the scoreline look comfortable.

Staniforth, however, wants to see more from his side when they travel to Birmingham on April 13 - see his Copsewood post-match in the video above.

“We made hard work of the win, he said.

“We wanted to kill the game off as early as possible but it took us at least 46 minutes to do that.

Belles launch their FAWSL2 season at Aston Villa on April 16.
