Danny Wilson says the international window provided the Reds squad with a welcome opportunity to brush up on the technical aspects of their play.
Rather than looking to boost his players’ fitness with hard running, the Barnsley boss took a more gentle approach over the last fortnight.
And he believes certain players will benefit from a short period of rest.
“We’ve had a good ten days where we’ve focused on the technical side of our game,” Wilson said.
“It’s been done, I wouldn’t say at a leisurely pace, but probably more enjoyable for the lads.
“To their delight they had the middle weekend off but it was great because I do think a few of them needed the rest.
“The start of the season in Leagues One and Two is particularly intense with the league programme plus the two cup competitions that you have to fit in.
“It all comes thick and fast in those first few weeks.
“It can hit you hard, particularly if you’re not used to it.”
Wilson admits the timing of the break was not ideal given a good run of form for his side was broken.
And he hopes the momentum has not been affected too much ahead of this weekend’s clash with MK Dons at Oakwell.
“Momentum has been knocked a bit with having the break,” he said.
“I hope it’s not knocked us out of our rhythm considering the results we’ve had recently.”
