INJURY cursed Grant Edwards faces a major fight to play again this season, writes Paul Goodwin.
The loose forward only battled back to fitness last season following a year out of the game after knee reconstruction surgery.
He injured his other knee in the Dons’ recent home win over Rochdale - and is now facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Coach Tony Miller told the Free Press: “The best case scenario is three months out for Grant.
“It’s a massive blow for him after what he’s been through but the good news is that it’s not his cruciate ligament like it was before.
“He’ll be a big miss for us but he will battle back from this, he’s a strong character.”
Edwards’ injury nightmare is almost the only blot on Dons’ brilliant start to the new season.
Miller was named professional coach of the year at Friday night’s Doncaster Sports Awards.
And his team is eyeing up an even bigger prize after a 40-18 victory at home to Oldham on Sunday kept them on top of Co-operative Championship One.
The Dons travel to third placed Workington on Sunday looking to make it eight wins out of nine in the league.
Miller said: “Workington will be an acid test for us.
“It’s always a tough game up in Cumbria and it will be a big challenge for us.
“We’ve come a long way as a team and there’s no doubt that Paul Cooke has made a big difference.
“He controlled the game against Oldham and has been a big part of our successful start - but we’ve got a long way to go yet.
“It was nice for myself and the club to be recognised,” Miller added on his coaching award.
“But something like this is not just for me, it’s for everyone at the club including all my coaches and backroom team.”
Dons had seven different try scorers on Sunday as the class of Cooke and the power of their dominant pack proved too much for Oldham.
Craig Fawcett, Tom Hodson, Fran Welsh, Mike Kelly, Danny Cowling, Kyle Kesik and Jack Ely all touched down as Miller’s side coasted to victory.
Miller was also pleased with his side’s defensive resilience.
Chris Spurr and skipper Craig Robinson will return to the squad this weekend.
