DONS’ boss Tony Miller has added to his squad ahead of the start of pre-season training at the end of the month after beating several other interested clubs to sign former Hull Kingston Rovers hooker Nathan Powley.
The 20 year-old former England Schools international was released by the Super League club at the end of last season.
“Nathan was well thought of by the club but he was that age where he couldn’t play for their Under-20s side so they had to make a decision on him,” said Miller.
“I know that some other clubs came in for him so I’m delighted to have him on board. He’s a good distributor, he’s aggressive defender and he knows when to break from acting half-back. If he sees a lazy defender he knows how to exploit them.
“He’s also got a bit of pace around the ruck so he’s everything you want in a hooker.
“I know we’ve already got two good hookers in Kyle Kesik and Jack Ely, but Kyle could possibly play at half-back, as he did when Craig Fawcett was out injured last season, and Jack can play elsewhere in the forwards, so we’ve got various permutations.
“But Nathan is a good player and, as I say, I’m glad to have him on board.”
Former club captain Craig Lawton has also signed on again for next season.
The Doncaster-based back-rower missed the second half of last season after suffering hand and back injuries.
“I’m delighted that Craig will be back with us next season,” said Miller.
“He’s shown over the years that he is a really consistent performer and he rarely has a bad game. He knows what Championship One is all about.
“He’s a Doncaster lad and he’s good to have around off the pitch as well as on it. He’s got a lot of experience as he is as good as anyone about in his position in this division.”
