Half back Paul Mennell has come out of early retirement to become Gary Thornton’s first new signing for Doncaster RLFC.
The former Batley and Halifax playmaker, 28, could make his debut against London Broncos at Castle Park on Sunday.
Thornton said: “Paul finished this year due to his girlfriend giving birth, but I have managed talked him out of retirement and he’s decided to come and join us here, so I am delighted about that.
“He is looking to get into coaching, so he sees it as a great opportunity to come and help out in the playing side and also get involved with the coaching side as well.
“I’m really pleased to sign an experienced Championship player of Paul’s calibre, as soon as I got this job and I was looking for available half backs and Paul was the first one who came to mind.
“I knew he was out of the game and available, it was just a case of whether he still had the hunger and appetite to play which he has thankfully. He was the number one target.”
