Strong-running centre Bevon Armitage is targeting a third consecutive B & I Cup Pool D victory against Bedford Blues at Castle Park this weekend.

“We said at the start of the season we wanted to give it our best shot and I feel that we’ve made a positive start with two bonus point wins,” he said.

“I feel that we are a team which is putting in a lot of effort and playing some good rugby.

“Whereas in the past we rested players in the B & I Cup we are trying to keep a consistency week in, week out.

“Director of rugby Clive Griffiths doesn’t want to be chopping and changing every week; he wants to keep the structures he’s put in place whatever the competition we are playing in.

“Being at home again this weekend it’s a game we’ll be looking to win. But we’ve got to guard against falling asleep at times as we did against Pirates last weekend because we can’t rely on scoring a last minute try to win the game every week.

“All the top sides play for 80 minutes and that is what we’ve got to aspire to do. If we can do that, or get anywhere near, then someone will cop a big beating.

“As I say, we are happy with the start we’ve made in both the Championship, where we currently hold down fourth spot, and the B & I Cup.”

He went on: “But we can’t relax and we won’t get the chance if we wanted to because (backs and skills coach) Paul Cooke, for one, is always looking for improvement.

“He’s been amazing since he’s been here and works very hard to improve the team’s handling skills. He also helps to keep us grounded during the week.”
