Doncaster Knights’ Mat Clark has one goal this season - to help drive his new club to the top of the table.

The 23-year-old centre/winger arrived at Castle Park from Leeds Carnegie and has made a solid impact in the club’s three pre-season friendlies scoring five tries.

Four of those scores came in the comfortable 67-0 win over Hull on Saturday.

Since being relegated from the Championship, director of rugby Clive Griffiths has assembled a new-look squad for their National One campaign which begins on Saturday.

Clark arrived in June and has already bought into the Knights’ philosophy that nothing short of winning the league will do this season.

“Everyone is really excited to get started. We’ve had a long pre-season so we just want to get going,” said the former Huddersfield back.

“I came down on June 2 and there were only about five regulars so everyone was in the same boat and everyone has really gelled, especially in these last few games.

“We’ve really come together as a squad so that has really helped everyone settle in.

“Everyone has the same goal. We’ve all bought into the goal that we want promotion at the end of the season, it’s just a matter of getting used to the boys and how different players play.

“We’re coming on leaps and bounds.

“Everything is focused on this season and, step by step, getting to the end of the season where we want to be which is top of the table.”

Doncaster made light work of their National Two opponents Hull RFC on home turf at the weekend.

Michael Hills began the scoring spree as he crashed over in the third minute for his first try of two.

Other scorers included Clark (4), Bevon Armitage, Louis Spencer, Dougie Flockhart and Adam Kettle.

Paul Roberts and Flockhart shared kicking duty.

“I think we got a lot out of the game,” added Clark.

“It’s good to build on that performance and know where we are.

“We’ll assess the game we’ve just played, see what we need to improve on and really get down to the hard stuff.”
