BULLY IS FULLY READY FOR ENGLISH TITLE TILT
THE COUNTDOWN to Birmingham is on.
In just five weeks Stefy Bull will step through the ropes for probably his final shot at major honours when he makes his challenge for the English lightweight title at the Aston Events Centre in the West Midlands.
And he heads into that contest on the back of a comfortable win after seeing off tough Polish fighter Arek Malek at the Doncaster Dome last Friday night.
He said: "I was really pleased with my performance. My trainer Dave Hulley said it was a professional performance and that's really what I needed to do against a tough fighter.
"He's been in there and gone the distance with some top lads so I was going out there looking for nothing more than a points win and that's what I got.
"I switched off a little bit in the fifth round and I think it was because I got a bit bored with what I was doing. It let the lad in to try and rough me up a bit but I recovered and saw it through.
"Thankfully I came out with no injuries and no marks which is the most important thing at my age with the injuries I've had over the last few years and with the English title fight coming up."
The Conisbrough fighter is set to meet champion Martin Gethin, who picked up the belt in January with a comfortable points win over former Bull opponent Graeme 'Dezzi' Higginson.
Bull was full of praise for his young Swinton prospect Tommy Coward who made his long awaited professional debut at the Dome, forcing opponent Billy Graham to retire with a broken nose after the second round.
Coward was a highly decorated amateur, earning national titles and England honours but fell out of love with the sport following a couple of high profile defeats.
Bull said: "We were over the moon for Tommy. He's off the mark now and he shook off a lot of the rust he's picked up over the last few years.
"He was a bit raw in the first and was trying to load up but he soon settled and it was nice to see him come into the corner at the end of the round barely out of breath.
"Then he went out there in the second and showed what he could do. He really settled and he was picking his shots nicely. It was a great right straight that broke the kid's nose and the blood was still pouring out in the dressing room.
"The most important thing Tommy will have got out of this will be confidence. It's so easy to fall into the losing mentality, that's what turns kids into journeymen. But Tommy has shown he's shaken that off.
"Anyone who knows boxing knows that Tommy could be a top fighter."
Coward will next be in action at Sheffield City Hall on April 17, the night after his mentor's English title bout.
A full and indepth ringside report from Friday evening's card appears in this week's South Yorkshire Times.
