Play the game, not the occasion.

That’s the advice from director of rugby Clive Griffiths ahead of Doncaster Knights’ Sky-televised derby with Rotherham Titans today (12.45pm).

Doncaster go into the much-anticipated Castle Park clash having slipped somewhat alarmingly to second bottom in the Championship.

The Knights have suffered five straight league defeats and ended 2014 with a disappointing 24-3 reverse at Nottingham - leading Griffiths to emphasise the importance of game management this weekend.

“The lads will certainly be up for it with it being a derby and the fact that it is live on Sky,” said the Welshman.

“But we’ve got to have our game management right from the off.

“What we did in the build-up to the Nottingham game was bang on, as was our game-plan.

“But unfortunately one or two players went away from what we had talked about and we got our backside spanked.”

Fifth-placed Rotherham go into the clash on the back of a surprise defeat at home to Moseley on Boxing Day.

Today’s game is live on Sky Sports 1 from 12.30pm.
