Title hope after Coward slays Jay the Assassin

Top of bill: Tommy Coward

Top of bill: Tommy Coward

TOMMY Coward improved his burgeoning record in the best fashion with a win over a fighter who has caused his fair share of problems for our fighters in the past.

Headlining for the first time, former England amateur Coward from Swinton took apart ‘Isle of Wight Assassin’ Jay Morris inside the distance at the Dome on Friday.

Morris has wins over both Curtis Woodhouse and Jerome Wilson, but light-middleweight Coward had no such problems.

He forced a fifth round stoppage after landing just about every shot in the book on Morris and he’ll now seek a title fight later this year.

There were mixed results for three other fighters at lightweight on the Doncaster card. Parson Cross’ Joe Rodgers inflicted a fair amount of damage on Mansfield tough-guy Pavels Senkovs to take a points decision over their four rounder.

Cudworth’s Andy Townend smashed Bulgarian Evgeni Geshev aside with two left hooks in the opening round.

Debutant Robbie Barrett from Darfield beat journeyman Kristian Laight comfortably on points, whilst Rossington’s Maxi Hughes earned a draw, after a spirited display against Paisley’s Ronnie Clark.

Doncaster debutant Ste Mac put in a dominant display against Steve Spence to win on points at light-middleweight.

Local bantamweight Connor Nixon made it two wins from two with a points win over tough Glaswegian Ryan McNicol.
