Spencer and Mitchell get careers underway with classy victories

TWO Doncaster debutants got off to winning starts in the ring over the weekend.

Highly-thought of Bentley heavyweight Carl Spencer, aged 26, brutally put Lithuanian Rolandas Cesna away inside the distance following a series of knockdowns at the Don Valley Stadium.

Unsurprisingly, considering his enormous six feet eight frame, Spencer looks like he can pack a real punch but the second knockdown of the fight came after a lightning quick combination landed.

Spencer’s skill levels are testament to his England experience in the amateurs but his manager Dennis Hobson is keen to bring him along at a rate that suits him. Thorne’s light-heavyweight Danny Mitchell, also 26, looked assured on his debut against Nick Gigg...that was until he lost his purse after the fight!

Mitchell governed the fight with a surprisingly good jab given his MMA background but looked more panicked when looking for the envelope with his payment in afterwards. Luckily Barnsley Metrodome staff found it.

Bessacarr’s light-heavy James Tucker feels like justice was done when he picked up a win on the same show as Spencer. Up against muscular debutant Ben Bradford, from Worksop, Tucker rode the early onslaught and took control of the fight when his inexperienced opponent tired and thoroughly deserved the 59-57 win. “I’ve been robbed the previous two weeks when I’ve boxed away from home and it’s good to get a win under my belt,” said Tucker.

Harworth’s Joe Elfidh took a fight against a former world champion at just 24 hours notice.

Former ABA champion Jason Cunningham from Woodlands is set to fight this Friday night at Rotherham’s Magna Centre.
