Cunningham’s sights on McDonnell’s titles

JASON Cuningham’s trainer Mike Bromby believes that the youngster is only a year off winning a first professional title.
The former ABA champion and amateur stand-out returns to the ring for his third pro fight at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge a week on Saturday.
It’ll be another test of the 22-year-old southpaw’s credentials against Glaswegian tough-guy Ryan McNicol, who has only been stopped once in 15 defeats. With Cunningham being the same weight as treble champion Jamie McDonnell, their paths could cross one day in a huge fight for the region.
Cunningham’s still developing and has so far faced two seasoned journeymen and won through with flying colours according to his Hull-based trainer Bromby.
He said: “It’s a building progress with Jason. He’s won every round he’s boxed in so far as a professional. He’s moving on as a fighter and I’m sure one day he’ll be Doncaster’s next British champion.”
By the time Cunningham is ready for a title shot, at either super-flyweight or bantamweight, depending on where the opportunities happen to be at that given time, McDonnell could well be out of his league with a world title or in a different division.
That’s not to say a fight may never happen between the two, especially given Cunningham’s pedigree and dedication: “Jason shows commitment to train over in Hull with us and he’d train every day if he could,” said Bromby.
“He’s a great talent and he won’t be far off Jamie’s titles soon. The confidence is there. More punch picking will make him a better fighter and he’s got a great defence already. In a year’s time we’ll be looking at the Central Area title.”
Plans are in place for Rossington’s Maxi Hughes, aged 22, to have a re-match with Paisley’s Ronnie ‘The Shark’ Clark.
The lightweight duo were involved in an entertaining bout at the Doncaster Dome a fortnight ago and both managed to preserve their unbeaten records with a draw.
Hughes’ trainer Jamie Kennedy and manager Chris Aston both believed that their fighter should have won. Kennedy said: “I want to let Maxi’s cut heal so he’s off the Ponds Forge bill but a re-match is waiting to happen. Everyone had Maxi winning three of the four rounds and we’re confident he’d win a re-match comfortably.”
