Boxing: Nixon’s heart on Valentine victory

CONNOR Nixon is hoping he won’t get in a tangle when he steps up to six rounds.

The young Hatfield super-flyweight prospect will be thrown in with another southpaw in Halifax’s Scott Gladwin on Stefy Bull’s Valentines weekend show at the Doncaster Dome.

Usually unattractive affairs, Nixon’s hopeful that his speedy style will make it the best encounter on the 10-fight bill on February 15: “Southpaw versus southpaw can be boring sometimes but we’ll just see how it goes,” admitted the 19-year-old who is 4-0 (1ko).

“It’s a step-up in distance and class but it’s what I need to progress in my career.

“I have no trouble making that weight as I weighed eight stone one last time out and I feel strong and really fast at it.”

Despite Gladwin losing his last two, to Nixon’s stablemate Gavin McDonnell and former Olympian Kal Yafai, his unbeaten record is still at risk with Gladwin having won his previous five.

Nixon, dubbed ‘pretty boy’ by mentor Bull, remains undaunted and knows what kind of boost a win would give him.

He continued: “It would catapult me up the rankings, but there’s no rush as I’m only 19 and it’s a small division.

“The fight comes between Valentine’s Day and my birthday but I don’t mind. Boxing comes first and it’s always going to be my main focus.”

Headlining will be Harworth’s Joe Elfidh against Huddersfield’s Tyrone Nurse. Josh Morgan, also from Harworth, will debut at light-welterweight. Luke Crowcroft and Micky Davies are also in action.

* Professional boxing will return to Doncaster Racecourse in March but it’s unclear as to how big the show will be.

Just two fights are scheduled to date with the derby re-match between James Tucker and Daniel Slaney the main attraction and unbeaten Barnsley middleweight novice Ben Davies will also feature in the show promoted by Glyn Rhodes.
