Rovers fight for place in Championship

PREVIEW:
SOUTHEND UNITED V DONCASTER ROVERS
After the disappointment of falling at the final hurdle, Rovers must get back on their feet and complete the task they have so superbly maintained their sights on throughout the season.
Now is the time for Sean O'Driscoll's charges to stand up and prove that they are capable of carrying the side into the Championship, banishing all thoughts of a collapse after the events of last weekend.
Sides that suffer final day disappointment are always expected to fail in their play-off bids and Doncaster must now attempt to buck the trend.
Wembley is just two legs away and so is a potential dream - or nightmare - Yorkshire derby with Leeds, who meet Carlisle in the other semi-final with the first leg on Monday.
The lottery of the playoffs now face Rovers, with a long trip to Essex up first as they meet a Southend side looking to bounce back into the second tier at the first attempt.
Promotion or not, this season will be viewed as a success for Steve Tilson's Southend as they have responded well from relegation out of the Championship last season despite the departure of several key players including now-Barnsley winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce and top scorer Freddie Eastwood.
Solid form at Roots Hall has been matched with prowess on the road that has only been beaten by Swansea and Leeds in terms of victories.
Tilson continues his revolution at Southend with success never far away after back to back promotions and an immediate response from the disappointment of relegation.
Surprisingly for a promotion chasing side, Southend do not have an out and out goalscorer in the mould of Eastwood who left the club last summer.
However, what The Shrimpers do have is a number of goal scorers with Nick Bailey, Mark Gower and Alan McCormack all approaching double figures from midfield for the season.
Back in September, McCormack, Adam Barrett and Sheffield Wednesday loanee Leon Clarke netted as Southend triumphed 3-2 over a Rovers side who had Gareth Roberts and Lewis Guy to thank for their consolations.
A similar result would not be too disastrous for Rovers this time around as a 3-1 win over The Shrimpers at the Keepmoat in December will fill them with confidence for the pressure of the second leg a week later.
Neither side's form has been particularly impressive in recent weeks with Southend picking up one win in four while Rovers have two victories in that period.
So who will stand up and be counted?
PLAYER TO WATCH: PETER CLARKE
The no-nonsense defender has established himself as a fan's favourite at Southend with his calming influence at the back proving to be valuable for the club.
A former Everton trainee, 26-year-old Clarke made only a few appearances on Merseyside before a move up the west coast to Blackpool rejuvinated his career.
Transferring to newly promoted Southend last season, he failed to help them starve off relegation but remains a quality defender and a potential thorn in the side of Rovers on Friday.
