FOOTBALL
WHAT a start for Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United who have answered their doubters and demonstrated their intentions.
The Millers have chipped a third off their weighty points penalty and sent their fiercest rivals crashing out of the Carling Cup while Rovers have gone toe to toe with two Championship heavyweights and more than accounted for themselves.

It has been a dream start for Rovers, who may well have winced at the sight of a trip to Derby and the visit of Cardiff as their welcome back to the second tier after a 50 year gap, and they have demonstrated that they will be a tough opponent for their league rivals.

Doncaster made it four points from their first two Championship games, against two sides with strong Premiership ambitions, but will be disappointed that it wasn't six out of six after leading until the 88th minute against Cardiff.

But there was no disappointment for Rotherham who made it two wins out of two and banished the demons of last season with a 3-1 win against Morecambe.

Even at -11 points, Rotherham look to be one of the most dangerous sides in the division who can grind out results when necessary as they did when holding Sheffield Wednesday for much of their 120 minute encounter.

For Wednesday, it has been a week of woe a million miles away from the opening day when optimism was high after the 4-1 thumping of Burnley.

The shootout defeat to Rotherham brought blushes rather than concern but it was the 4-1 defeat including a second half mauling at Wolves that has raised questions over whether The Owls can cope again in the Championship.

The biggest question hanging over Barnsley is were the bookies right to make them favourites for the drop? Two league defeats and a cup exit would suggest so but they showed signs of fight against a Coventry side with their tails up.

Sheffield United quickly put the disappointment of the late defeat to Birmingham in the curtain raiser behind them with an excellent 3-0 win over money men QPR which included a hattrick from Billy Sharp who looks to have finally settled into the red and white stripes.
