THE CONISBROUGH and Denaby amateur boxing community enjoyed another successful week as Matthew Neilson reached the international stage while one club reopened its doors after an enforced period of closure.
Tom Hill prospect Neilson crowned a remarkable season with his first ever call up to the England squad.
And only a bad cut above his eye would deny the 17-year-old gold at the Tri Nations championship last weekend at Everton Park.
At the end of the third round of the final, Neilson was well ahead on points but was deemed unable to continue due to a bad cut above his eye.
A spokesman for Tom Hill ABC said: "Matthew was brilliant and everyone was really impressed with him. It's just a shame that he got that cut because he would have won and he was up at a bigger weight class.
"It was a brilliant experience for him and a great way to end the season.
"We thought we'd done for the season but we got this call up at really short notice.
"I doubt that it will be the last time he gets selected because they were raving about him."
Conisbrough Amateur Boxing Club reopened its doors this week after a two month shutdown and is now ready to churn out a new wave of fighters.
After the departure of the previous head coach the club was forced to close its doors but now a new instructor has been recruited and more are to come. Pat Hale has taken the reins and his four brothers are to embark on a course to become ABA affliated coaches so the club can operate on a full time basis.
A spokesperson for the club said: "Hopefully within a couple of months we can get the lads passed so they can help Pat out and get the gym back up and running properly ahead of the new season. It's all gone off the boil a little bit but it's going to be revived now. We know we're having a few coming down in this first week and we're hoping to attract a few more."
The gym, on Wingate Hill in Conisbrough is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5pm. For more information contact Leslie Riley on 07930666208.
