MAIN made it into seventh heaven as they captured the Montagu Cup in a highly competitive contest on a bitingly cold and windswept Easter Monday at Hampden Road.
The win gave John Mighali's side their seventh triumph in the 111-year-old competition and their first for three years as their killer touch proved the difference in a midfield war of attrition between two County Senior League sides.
After scraping past The Cottage and Swinton WMC on penalties and beating Westville in the semi final, Main enjoyed a relatively easier time of it against 2004 winners Dearne CMW and lifted the South Yorkshire Times-sponsored trophy.
Midfielder Adam Hallsworth opened the scoring as the quarter hour mark approached before dead ball specialist Chris Greaves increased the cushion with a superb free kick five minutes later.
Much of the first half play was bogged down in midfield with both sides exchanging blows but providing little in the way of decent chances.
Main appeared to settle into the conditions easier than their opponents and their crisp passing play gave them the edge over their opponents, who largely struggled throughout the morning.
Dearne did emerge from the break with their tails up and began to take the game to Main but soon settled back into their first half form.
Five minutes in, it was Main who should have increased their lead but a wayward free header and a pulled shot denied them the opportunity of sealing the game.
It was not long before they were three up, however, as referee Brian Hardeman awarded a penalty to Main.
A long ball into the box found Ryan Tate who controlled well and advanced before going down under a challenge.
Despite heavy protests, the spot kick was given and Rob Branagan stepped up confidently to send the keeper the wrong way and add to his lower-than-normal goal tally this season.
Neither side particularly impressed throughout the contest and the rest of the game played out with the odd chance here and there but both defensive lines should be praised for their resolute performances in difficult conditions.
Andrew Joburns between the Mexborough sticks proved to be Dearne's tormentor as he denied them on several occasions including an excellent save in a one on one situation.
His opposite number Lee Gray had his share of the action when Main enjoyed a five minute period camped in the final third.
Gray demonstrated his fantastic reactions as he pulled off an unbelievable save when the ball was fired at him from point blank range and the big man should also be commended for diffusing a fiery confrontation as tempers and frustrations flared.
Dearne really should have had a consolation strike late on when an excellent cross from the right was met well but turned narrowly wide and ensured a clean sheet for Main.
