BANDS, choirs and music groups in the Dearne Valley are being given the opportunity to become part of the closing event at the London 2012 Olympics.
Those with musical talent are being sought to participate in the Bandstand Marathon which will take place on Sunday, September 9, 2012.
Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said: “The Bandstand Marathon is a great opportunity to come together with a real sense of community to celebrate the best of your local area.”
The event is organised by national not-for-profit arts organisation Superact, who are aiming for 500 locations across UK hosting simultaneous performances as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
Bandstand Marathon has been running successfully since 2008 and next year will be the biggest yet with even more opportunities for local musicians to showcase their talents whilst joining in the spirit of London 2012.
Katharine Lane, Superact’s Associate Director, said: “This really is a unique opportunity for musicians in Yorkshire to be part of a major national music event and create a musical legacy post London 2012.”
“Superact can offer bands a fee to take part plus loads of support with planning and publicity – all of which is invaluable for them in the future.”
Anyone who would like to take part can visit www.bandstandmarathon.org.uk or call Sue Lowe on 01823 332413 to register your interest.
