Football teams rembembered the Christmas Day truce during World War I when British and German soldiers left their trenches to play the beautiful game.

Clubs from across the region have supported a ‘Football Remembers’ initiative aimed at remembering the impromptu ceasefire in 1914, when soldiers put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no-man’s land’ to play football.

The initiative is a joint collaboration between The Football Association, the Premier League, the Football League and the British Council aimed at remembering what happened on the battlefield 100 years ago and forging friendships between teams and players today.

Photographs of teams taking part in the initiative, showing players mingling, have been added to a special website to be preserved for future generations.

Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge and FA president, said: “It is a powerful way to engage and educate young people about such an important moment in our history.

“We all grew up with the story of soldiers from both sides putting down their arms on Christmas Day, and it remains wholly relevant today as a message of hope over adversity, even in the bleakest of times.”
