From the weekend squatting in residential buildings became a criminal offence punishable by up to six months’ jail and fines up to £5,000.

Lots of people will be celebrating this move, seeing it as a long-needed opportunity to get rid of ne’er do wells.

After all why should hard working folk pay rent and mortgages while these scroungers get it all for free and contribute nothing?

Ending squatters rights and sending in the police to evict them might give a warm feeling to right-minded upstanding members of society, but..

Why is it in the second decade of the 21st century that the UK does not have enough social housing for its population?

And why is it nigh on impossible in some parts for single people to get on the housing list?
