Wroot pub couple’s CAMRA award

A HUSBAND and wife team have won rave reviews and a top award for the real ales they serve at an Isle pub.
Barry and Beryl Tonkinson are celebrating after their boozer, The Cross Keys in Wroot, was named District Pub of the Season for Winter/Autumn by the Doncaster Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
The couple, who have run the pub for eight years and have two grandchildren, said this was the first time they have won such an accolade.
Mr Tonkinson, 61, said: “We are thrilled to have won this and its the first time we have had such an honour.
“We have Black Sheep, which is not usually sold in this part of Yorkshire, and also Theakston’s draft which is my best seller.
“Any success we have here is all down to our loyal customers and I want to thank them for all their support.
“We get a lot of people in from Wroot and other villages as well. People always comment on how there is a friendly, welcoming atmosphere in the pub.”
Doncaster CAMRA marked them in a number of areas, including how the beer is kept, what ales are on offer and, of course, taste.
The couple have been running pubs for the best part of four decades, having previously been behind the bar at The White Bear in Doncaster, Flying Childers, Bessacarr, and Harvey Arms, Finningley.
Mr Tonkinson said: “They were impressed with pretty much all aspects of the pub which is great for us.
“I have been in the pub trade for 36 years. Wroot is a great community and the pub is seen as a hub for everyone.
“We try not to change things around too much so people know what they are getting.”
Praising the pub, Vinnie Round, of Doncaster CAMRA, said the ales were in “good condition and well worth sampling.”
He added that the pub is “well supported from locals and country people alike from around the area.”
The couple will be presented with a certificate and plaque for winning the honour on February 2.
