Women being ‘robbed’ of pensions says MP

OVER 15,000 women in South Yorkshire will be kept waiting above a year for their pension, an MP has warned.

Michael Dugher, Barnsley East MP, said women aged 56 and 57 feel ‘robbed’ of 12 months’ pension. Government plans to accelerate the state pension age increases, mean that nationally, 300,000 women born between December 6 1953 and October 5 1954, will wait an extra 18 months. An unlucky 33,000 born between March 6 1954 and April 5 1954 will wait an extra two years, before being entitled to a state pension.

Women may be working reduced hours to care for grandchildren or elderly parents.

They have just five years’ notice before the change, and could lose more than £15,000 if they get the full pension credit.

The MP said: “The Government’s plans to increase the state pension age disproportionately affects women. Many have juggled working lives with raising a family, and have little retirement saving to fall back on.

“I will be fighting these changes.”

People need to be aware that the government are going to make changes to Pension Credit, this will affect people who have younger partners, see bolow. "Quote" Welfare Reform Bill Explanatory Notes: Page 22 145. Paragraph 64 amends the State Pension Credit Act 2002 so that a member of a couple who has attained the qualifying age for state pension credit may not receive state pension credit if the other member of the couple has not attained that qualifying age. This is to ensure that all claimants who have not attained the qualifying age for state pension credit are required to claim universal credit and, if appropriate, be subject to work-related conditions of entitlement. Single people will still be able to claim Pension Credit when they reach qualifiying age. At the moment I receive Pension Credit but it looks as though this will change soon as my wife is ten years younger than myself and with her retirement age going up we will not qualify again until I am 76, this makes for a poverty stricken retirement. Thanks a lot Cameron!!!
