WOMBWELL Swimming Baths is unlikely to be saved, despite the protests of thousands of objectors.
Barnsley Council’s Cabinet meets this month to decide whether the baths will go, along with leisure centres at Penistone and Athersley.
Locals, anxious to keep the well-used baths and gym, have raised a petition of over 200 names. But the cash-strapped authority says it cannot afford to give managers BPL Leisure the extra cash it needs to keep the baths running.
Instead, it hopes to save £1.5m over five years by closing the three named sites.
Coun Dick Wraith said: “It’s a sorry situation but the fact is, the funding just isn’t there.
“There’s talk of the petition being taken to London but that won’t help – it’ll just get sent back again as a local issue.
The Baths are used by seven schools for swimming lessons, and has its own swimming club with 300-plus members.
