England cricket star Joe Root bowled fans over at Doncaster Racecourse.

The 22-year-old, from Dore in Sheffield, currently starring against Australia in the Ashes, spent the evening mixing with racegoers while celebrating his brother’s birthday, before being asked by racecourse bosses to present the prize for the winner of one of its seven races.

Mark Spincer, Doncaster Racecourse managing director, said: “We had no idea that he was coming along, so it was a real treat for the team at the racecourse, as well as the racegoers who had the chance to meet him, to chat to Joe and help him relax as he prepares for the Old Trafford Test tomorrow.”

Joe presented a prize to the owners of winning filly, Shesastar, after a race.
