When the chips are down

Now here’s a good idea for a frugal feast Rogers style. Mexborough shoppers can pick up cheap oven chips - as part of a major fire service campaign to cut kitchen fires.

South Yorkshire’s firefighters tackled more than 300 cooking related house fires last year resulting in 75 injuries, making up around 50 per cent of all the accidental house fires in the county.

Many of those injuries were caused by old fashioned chip pans, which is why the fire service is using money off vouchers for oven chips to encourage shoppers to chuck theirs away. Fire service staff will be visiting Mexborough’s Co-operative Food supermarket on Orchard Street between 9am and 1pm on May 29 and June 13.

Cooking related fires apparently account for half of all the house fires in South Yorkshire.

See you in the queue!
