We all have our tools of the trade and for us journalists it’s fair to say the dictionary is considered the Bible of the industry.
Whether it’s an old-school hard copy or an online companion I use the dictionary and its sister publication the thesaurus on a daily basis.
But it seems the holy grail of the industry is being tarnished by the introduction of random new fangled words that are added, usually after being drastically over used on social media.
Although new additions are added to the sacred publication on a quarterly basis these latest entries have left me quite literally lost for words.
And there is only one person to blame for the most recent random offering and that’s irritating teen star Miley Cyrus.
Thanks to the pop princess and her desire to shed her squeaky clean Disney image “Twerking” has now earned its place in the Oxford Dictionary.
For those for you who don’t know about this latest phenomenon it is basically the dirty dancing of the modern age. The complex process involves shaking your bum around and was shown in all its glory by the songstress when she recently took to the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in America.
According to the Oxford Dictionary Online, to twerk is “to dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”
Miley Cyrus took this to the extremes during her performance parading around in a flesh coloured bikini and doing all manner of provocative things with a large foam hand while “twerking” away and sticking her tongue out.
The scandalous act became the talk of celebville in the wake of the provocative performance.
If you haven’t seen it it’s worth a Google but beware it is probably one of the cringiest things you will ever see.
But her attention seeking ploy has obviously worked as weeks on it’s still making headlines.
That’s all well and good for Miley but please don’t drag the dictionary down to your booty shaking level.
Selfie is another word that has made the quarterly cut of the dictionary.
This self indulgent act is another that has been spearheaded by celebrities but taken on by the masses who spend their hours taking pictures of themselves and airbrushing them with different filters before awaiting the surge of compliments.
I’m well aware that language evolves and we need to be up on the latest lingo but desecrating the dictionary for this is a step too far.
