When Isle mum Wendy Rogers took on a new job to put an extra £40 a month in her pay, little did she know she would end up a national success story.
But 20 years on Wendy has climbed the career ladder to become her company’s highest earner, and last year she turned over £440,000.
Wendy, of Westwoodside, started as a one person operation, but now has 300 sales consultants under her, covering the Isle, South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and Humberside.
The 50-year-old of Westwoodside, was working full-time for a bank when, despite having no previous selling experience, she started working a few hours for beauty firm Oriflame.
She told the Bells: “I enjoyed the work from the start and I’m my own boss, working my own hours.
“That meant everything to me as the kids were growing up.
“I quite quickly saw I could develop a career, then left the bank to follow it up. I’ve never looked back.”
Wendy’s earnings are totally commission-based and this, she claims, gives her total freedom and the chance to award herself a pay rise at will.
“It’s helped my two children, seeing how I work and being able to spend time with them too,” said Wendy. “It’s given them confidence.”
Although current times may have helped push the 10 per cent increase in new recruits since last August, Wendy claims there is no such word as recession in her vocabulary.
“It’s difficult times for some,” she said. “But I have a team of people who believe in what they offer and business hasn’t suffered.”
Social networking sites, namely Facebook and Twitter help enormously, she admits, and a good proportion of business is effected along those routes.
“It’s a simple formula,” said Wendy, who loves horse-riding and family holidays.
“Because I fix my hours around my family it’s paid for treats such as going on theatre trips or to the Olympics in the summer.
“Some people might call me a workaholic but I’m not.
“I may be seen working evenings but that’s because that’s my choice, maybe instead of mornings that particular week.”
She added: “I have a fantastic team of people who make me want to get out of my door every morning to work with them, enthusiastically, and that counts for a lot.
“I was over the moon in 2010 when we grew our team sales by 35 per cent.
“Then in 2011 we smashed targets and grew our business by a further 94 per cent. 2012 was fantastic with 26 per cent growth.”
