Residents are being warned to take extra care after the Met Office issued a snow and ice weather warning.
The warning that will be in place until noon on Sunday predicted heavy showers across the area, these falling as snow at low levels.
Occasional accumulations of 2 to 4 cm are likely, with more than 8 cm on high ground.
Ice will be an additional hazard.
Snow showers will also be accompanied by strong or very strong winds and this may bring temporary blizzard conditions over higher ground, leading to difficult driving conditions on higher routes.
