The parents of a Barnsley man killed in Syria said they are ‘very proud’ of their son and are ‘devastated’ by his death.

Konstandinos Erik Scurfield, aged 25, a former Royal Marine, from Royston, was fighting as a volunteer in Syria when he came under attack near the town of Qamishli, on the border with Turkey, on Monday.

He was named by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which he had joined as a volunteer fighter.

It is understood he was killed by mortar fire in an area where ISIS forces have been attacking Kurdish and Christian communities.

His parents - dad Christopher, an archaeologist and mum Vasiliki - live in a detached farmhouse in Royston

They said in a statement: “We are devastated to confirm the death of our son Konstandinos Erik Scurfield in Syria where he went to support the forces opposing Islamic State.

“His flame might have burned briefly but it burned brightly with love, courage, conviction and honour and we are very proud of him.

“We would like to request that we be allowed to grieve in peace as a family without intrusion at this difficult time.”

His uncle looked clearly distraught as he spoke to reporters today.

Phil Karagounis emerged from the home at around 3pm to let reporters know there would be no further statements from the family.

He said: “Please let us grieve in peace.”

Meanwhile friends have posted tributes on Kosta’s Facebook page.

Friend, Ollie Koop, who lives in London, said: “It is so true when people say the best ones are taken too soon!

“He was genuinely one of the most coolest, smartest and most talented people I have ever had luck to know.

“RIP Konstandonis Erik Scurfield. God couldn’t wait for you. X”

Megan Thorpe, from Nottingham, said: “RIP to another fallen soldier, we will remember you.”
