The fire broke out at the Boogie Bar in Hall Gate at about 8.50pm last night and several members of staff were evacuated from the building.

Rumours initially circulated on social media that the fire had been caused by a bomb blast but South Yorkshire Police quickly denied this and issued a statement to allay any public concerns.

The force said: "We are aware of various rumours circulating online regarding an incident in Doncaster. We have attended a fire at Hall Gate this evening. Fire service has confirmed this is an electrical fault.

"Members of the public should not be concerned at this time."

Video footage and pictures from passersby shows flames and plumes of smoke coming out of the building. Three fire engines from Doncaster Central and Edlington stations spent five hours tackling the blaze.

A Doncaster Central firefighter, who did not want to be named, said: "Nobody was injured and there were only a few members of staff in the bar as they were just opening up. The cause is under investigation."

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "The fire is believed to have originated in the cellar, possibly relating to the electrics on the premises which are heavily smoke logged."
