Hundreds of Volkswagen campervan enthusiasts have already flocked to the borough for the second Doncaster Classic VW festival, with more expected to visit on the final day today.
The festival, held this year at Parklands Sports and Social Club, was organised by Clive Tatum who said the weekend is much better than he expected so far.
Over 300 visitors attended the festival yesterday, with numbers expected to increase today.
Natalie Carson, aged 21, travelled from Belton in the Isle of Axholme to attend the festival with her T25 Crew Cab Doka, Paddy.
Natalie, who bought Paddy in March, has loved campervans since she was a young girl. “My grandad made me a model campervan when she was nine-years-old, and it has since been passed down the generations. It’s my little cousin’s now.” she said.
Paddy is only one of 623 campervans of his kind in the country, and Natalie keeps him looking pristine by cleaning him regularly and keeping him in her garage.
For some, the festival has been a family affair.
Jonathan and Suzanne Carter travelled from their home in Howarth, West Yorkshire, with their four-year-old daughter Erin and their “second child”, Brian, the Early Bay 1969 campervan.
The couple had dreamed of owning a volkswagen, but it was a shock cancer diagnosis that finally lead to them buying one three years ago.
“When Jonathan was diagnosed with thyroid cancer it gave us the kick we needed to actually buy one [a campervan],” said Suzanne.
“You realise that you only live once. We stopped spending money on the house and started spending money on this instead.
We get away in it as often as we can, on weekends away and holidays. They do become part of the family. Brian is kind of like a second child.”
Jonathan added: “Buying one [a campervan] was the best decision we ever made. We’re making lovely memories for Erin.”
Visitors to the festival today can enjoy volkswagen displays, BMX, Chopper and scooter displays, live music and food.
The site closes at 6.30pm.
