A man had a lucky escape last night when his car mounted an electricity box after he fell ill at the wheel.

Firefighters from Elm Lane and Rivelin were called to the scene, on Wordworth Avenue near the junction with Herries Road, at 9.15pm last night.

The driver of the BMW 3 series, and sole occupant of the car, was checked over by paramedics at the scene and then taken to hospital.

A spokesman said: “The driver, a 45-year-old male, became ill at the wheel of the vehicle and ended up on top of the electricity box. The ambulance attended and the man was taken to hospital because of a pre-existing medical condition.”
