A MEMORIAL garden to a popular teenager who died has been unveiled at the school prom she was looking forward to attending.

It was a bitter sweet occasion for pupils at Ridgewood School as they remembered 15-year-old Amy Kirkby whose picture forms the centre piece of a garden created in her memory.

Amy collapsed suddenly at her home in Brompton Road, Sprotbrough, last September.

Her mum Joanne Kirkby visited the school in Barnsley Road, Sacwsby, to help unveil the garden.

Mrs Kirkby, 46, said: “It was so nice to see the garden. It looks lovely and it means so much that people have put so much time and effort into creating this garden for Amy.

“It did stick pins in our heart a bit thinking about how Amy should’ve been at the prom, what she would’ve worn and how much she would’ve love it.

“It was difficult but it was lovely that they gave Amy a special mention and all her friends were coming over to chat to us. It does help in a way because it makes us realise just how popular she was.

“Lucy, her sister, is starting at Ridgewood so it will be nice to think it’ll be somewhere Lucy can go to when she needs a bit of time to herself.”

Money raised for the Amy Kirkby Memorial Fund is currently being used to create a garden at Sprotbrough Cemetery where Amy’s ashes are scattered.

The garden that is expected to be finished in time for Amy’s birthday on Wednesday will feature 15 trees, a variery of roses including “ginger nut” roses in honour of Amy’s red hair and a memorial bench.

Other money from the fund will go to Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Doncaster-based charities.

A Michael Buble tribute act night is taking place at Sprotbrough Club tomorrow from 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 and are available from the club.

The event is to mark what would have been Amy’s 16th birthday.
