HUGGING a tree was not enough to outdo South Yorkshire Police’s helicopter team.

A man who was being pursued by the police chopper tried to avoid being detected by undressing and wrapping his body around a tree.

Officers had followed the man after he failed to stop his blue Vauxhall Corsa in Consibrough at midday yesterday.

He drove off the road, before abandoning the car and running off into some nearby woods.

Officers alerted the police helicopter which located ‘a heat source’ in the trees. The man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police officers, taking a car without consent and other motoring offences.

A tweet from the air operations team said: “You can’t make it up - to escape SY99 male undresses & hugs a tree as apparently a tree will absorb your body heat - wrong - one detained.”
