Transport bosses have made a U-turn to reintroduce a South Yorkshire bus route following a campaign by users.

The route of service 66, from High Green in Sheffield to Rotherham was changed at the start of September to no longer travel through as much of High Green – which campaigners say left some elderly and disabled bus users ‘stranded’.

However, after about 600 people signed a petition against the change and following meetings between High Green Community Action Team and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Sheffield Council and First Bus, the original route has been reinstated.

Jane Bellamy, from the community group, said the route stopped about half a mile earlier than normal during daylight hours, stopping at Greengate Lane rather than going on to The Fosters.

She said: “On Monday, September 1, the bus just stopped on part of the route and no-one knew why.

“People got on not knowing they weren’t going to be taken all the way home.”

Jane said the changes had resulted in a petition starting and meetings taking place in a bid to try to reverse the decision.

She said: “The action team immediately contacted the executive’s director general, First Group’s managing director and the cabinet member responsible for transport.

“She said all agreed the changes should not have been made without consultation with users and made the decision to reinstate the 66 bus to its normal route – Fosters to Rotherham interchange.

“The action team would like to thank the community for signing petitions and writing letters of support, as well as its volunteers for their persistence in getting the route back to normal.”

A Rotherham Bus Partnership spokesman said: “We acknowledge consultation could have been better on the changes.

“Having listened to feedback, we have reinstated the original route, and any future proposals will be passed by our customers first.”
