A BUS company has revealed the finishing touches to a 15-strong fleet of new buses that will serve the Dearne Valley.

Stagecoach Yorkshire’s eight new low floor single deckers, which run out of the firm’s Rawmarsh depot, have been launched on the 218 route following the first batch of seven vehicles which took to the roads in January. The full fleet has a combined value of £1.7 million.

Paul Lynch, Stagecoach Yorkshire managing director, said: “I am delighted to launch the second fleet of Stagecoach Yorkshire’s brand new fleet of buses because it is tremendous boost for public transport in the Dearne Valley.”

The 221 route links Rotherham, Mexborough and Doncaster and the 218 service travels through Rotherham, Mexborough and Barnsley via Manvers and Darfield.

The British built ADL Enviro 200 model, low floor single decker buses which meet the latest European emission standards, are designed to be fully accessible to elderly passengers, people with disabilities and families with young children.

They also have CCTV installed and are designed to use fuel economically.

Mr Lynch explained: “We decided to utilise the new buses on the 221 and 218 routes because we have seen passenger numbers grow steadily in the past few years in those areas and wanted the buses to benefit as many people as possible.

“The reaction to the first fleet of buses introduced in January has been positive. We hope they will continue to attract more passengers.”

Passengers using the new buses are also travelling further for less after Stagecoach recently discounted the cost of its Dearne Valley megarider, which provides unlimited travel in this area for £10.

The four-week, 13-week and 52- week online versions of the ticket are also discounted via Stagecoach’s website www.stagecoachbus.com/yorkshire.

Liz Booth, of the Rotherham Transport User Group, said the vehicles are a fantastic addition to the Dearne Valley roads.

She said: “I am delighted and hope they inspire everyone in the Dearne Valley to leave their cars at home and hop on the bus.”
