DONCASTER Mayor Peter Davies and a fire service boss have welcomed jail sentences handed to the bosses of an illegal tyre dump in Mexborough.

More than 120, 000 worn out tyres went up in flames 18 months ago at the Whitelea Grove site occupied by Tyre Trade UK Ltd.

The company’s operators Jane Hopkins, 45, formerly of Ewood Drive, Cantley, and David Squire, 31, of Cecil Avenue, Warmsworth, were jailed for nine months and banned from being company directors for seven years for breaching environmental health laws.

Mr Davies said: “The appalling actions of these individuals caused much distress and unsettled many people in Mexborough. I am delighted to see that the courts have handed out a jail term which is a fitting punishment and serves as a deterrent to others.”

Fire brigade area manager Dave Kiddy added: “It is absolutely right that businesses or individuals who deliberately ignore laws which are there to protect the environment are held to account for their irresponsible actions.”
