Plans for a new boxing club in Mexborough have been dealt a blow after the current building owners said they were selling up.

Tommy Joyce MBE, 66, was hoping to open Braveheart Boxing Club at Harrop Hall in honour of boxing coach brother Mick who died earlier this year.

But he is now looking for another venue after building owners, St John Ambulance, announced plans to sell it off.

The service said they would give Mr Joyce first refusal, but the retired school caretaker told the Times he doubts he will be able to afford it.

Mr Joyce, of Maple Road, Mexborough, said: “I am disappointed because we were already doing the place out. I think they will want about £15,000 for it so I will have to look at other places.”

A St John Ambulance spokesman said he hoped other organisations will be able to “provide the club with a place to meet.”
