THE Mexborough and Swinton branch of the Royal British Legion has a new lease of life thanks to an SOS in the South Yorkshire Times.
We reported that the 90-year-old branch faced closure because of its ageing and declining membership – and EIGHT new members stepped up to the breach.
Retiring branch secretary Terry Naylor said: “Thanks to the Times the cavalry came to the rescue!”
New members include Iraq veterans John Bettney and Mark Davis and Afghanistan veteran Les Binns, who lost an eye in the conflict.
New branch president is Frank Knapton MBE, who served in the Royal Military Mounted Police. Charity fundraising champ Tommy Joyce MBE, who has raised thousands of pounds for the Legion over the years has also joined.
Bolton-based Dearne Valley Bulldogs rugby team have pledged to sponsor the branch over the coming season.
Terry added:”The new lads will carry the standard forth and we will continue to exist in Mexborough, thanks to our appeal in the Times.”
