The Times’ Save Our Spoons petition was submitted to Doncaster Council this week – with nearly 500 people protesting against ANY closure of Mexborough’s Wetherspoon’s pub.
This week, Doncaster Council announced the venue’s licence WOULD be reviewed by councillors, and the pub COULD face closure.
The council said the reason for the review was the “protection of children from harm” – after the council’s Trading Standards department and South Yorkshire Police sent underage drinkers inside to buy alcohol.
NO date has yet been set for the review but interested parties have until February 3 to submit representations.
A Wetherspoon spokesman said: “The company thanks the Times and its readers for their support.
“JD Wetherspoon takes the issue of underage drinking very seriously. However, we reiterate that the company is against sting operations.”
