Time capsule will mark life in Epworth in 2013

A TIME capsule has been buried underneath an Isle church to help mark the closing stages of a major renovation.
Present day Isle life is preserved in copies of the Epworth Bells, church magazines and pictures which were all buried beneath the floor of St Andrew’s Church in Epworth.
This comes as work to renovate the 12th century building is nearing its final stages. Work started in 2000 and has cost around £1.6 million to complete.
Chairman of the restoration committee Melvyn Rose, of Garden Court, Epworth, said: “We don’t have a date when we are to dig up the time capsule as yet but we expect it will not be for a long, long time.
“It will be a great way for people to see what life was like in the Isle at present day.”
The renovation has been undertaken in five stages and has included work on the roof, floor, and the installation of new seating.
A heritage room has also been built which will feature a timeline history of the church.
Church members will be inviting school pupils in to learn about the Isle in days gone by.
The church has been closed for 18 months while the final stages of work are completed.
Project leaders hope it will be ready to hold services again from the end of March.
The restoration is due for completion in May.
Mr Rose said: “Everyone in the community is looking forward to the work being completed so we can get back into church.
“It will be like brand new while still keeping the history of the place.”
Funding for the scheme has been provided through various sources, including the Heritage Lottery Fund and North Lincolnshire Council.
