A surprise celebrity visitor got a great welcome when he called in to a Sheffield primary school.

Delighted youngsters at Springfield Primary School swamped the entertaining author David Walliams, who was there to chat about his latest book ‘Grandpa’s Great Escape’.

Pupils were able to pelt questions at David in an open session run by the children themselves, then they quietened down to listen to extracts from David’s books, read by the man himself.

The main aim of the visit was to encourage children to read and visit their local libraries. David regularly talks about the importance of literacy and his imaginative books are among the most popular titles chosen by young readers.

Coun Sioned-Mair Richards, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said: We really want children to read and what better way than to meet an author who writes such great books. We are so pleased that David Walliams took time to come and inspire the students at Springfield School. Obviously he has a fantastic way of putting this across when he talks to students and is great at showing how much fun reading can be!”

David Walliams has sold well over four million copies of his books. He has been described as the fastest growing children’s author in the UK.

All of the children were thrilled to receive an early Christmas present from David, in the form of copies of his latest book.
