SHOWERY weather did not put off racegoers as 5,000 turned up to Doncaster Racecourse’s first festive meeting.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was amongst the crowd for the National Hunt New Year Meeting which organisers are hailing as a roaring success.

A spokesman for the Doncaster Racecourse said: “This was the first New Year fixture held at the course and the team there are convinced it will quickly become established as the best attended National Hunt meeting at Doncaster.

“Despite showery weather around 5,000 people attended many of whom had not pre-booked and turned up on the day. There were lots of family groups and racegoers travelling from as far afield as Liverpool, Newcastle and Durham.”

Among those celebrating was Sir Alex Ferguson whose horse Harry The Viking won the Lynn Higgins 60th Birthday Novices Handicap.
