Like most other cathedrals a contribution to the running costs of the building is asked for. Sometimes it feels like a demand!
However if you are visiting to attend a service or for private prayer then the ‘admission’ is free. So on entering like many others I have the choice to pray or pay!
This may seem a harsh way of putting the issue and I am not being critical of cathedrals, but that is the choice for the visitor.
In many ways it pictures the ongoing conflict of our society and private life today, the financial and the spiritual.
Jesus spoke to his disciples about the need to pay to Caesar the things of Caesar through the coins that bore his image. Of course it does not have to be either or, but it could be both. I could have paid and prayed.
How I value those buildings that are open to anyone as a gift or resource, and how grateful that this is the case with both Wesley Memorial and St Andrews, in Epworth.
