Staff cuts at bus station
STAFF at Mexborough Bus Station are to lose their jobs as part of cutbacks announced by transport bosses this week.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) said the facility will become un-manned from April 1 because of the need to find budget savings.
SYPTE said the station has seen a “substantial fall” in ticket sales and customers requesting information over the past few years and they cannot “justify retaining a staffed presence.”
The operation of the bus station will remain and the accessible toilet facility will continue to be cleaned on a daily basis.
Customers wishing to buy Travelmaster tickets or get information relating to timetables, journey planning and travel passes are advised to get this from Rotherham Interchange or Doncaster Frenchgate.
SYPTE said this brings Mexborough into line with other Interchange facilities at Crystal Peaks, Manor Top, Wath and Grimethorpe.
This also follows on from staffing reductions made at Park and Ride sites last summer.
In addition to the cuts in Mexborough, staffing levels at Woodhouse Rail Station will be reduced to cover peak times only on Mondays to Saturday from April 1.
David Young, SYPTE Director of Customer Experience, described the decision to cut staff as “regrettable.”
He said: “There is pressure on all of us to find the best use of resources and so reducing or removing the staff cover at stations which are used infrequently is a sensible, if regrettable, measure.
“We will ensure that customers at both stations are informed well in advance of the change.”
