ORGANISING a fundraiser may often become popular through word of mouth but for one charitable church-goer, she made sure she kept quiet about the occasion.

For Vera Owen challenged herself to not say a single word for a sponsored silence in aid of Hatfield Church’s ‘Raise the Roof’ appeal.

Mrs Owen, a regular worshipper at the Grade-I listed church, has something to shout about after her quiet day raised around £240.

The fundraiser from Ancient Lane, Hatfield Woodhouse, said: “I wanted to do this fundraiser because I knew it would be difficult for me.

“The hardest thing was not being able to say thank you to people for their kind donations.”

The appeal has so far raised £72,000 to rebuild the roof of the 12th century churchwhich was the subject of lead thieves.
