South Yorkshire's creative school pupils recite their favourite poems as part of competition

Creative youngsters tested their public speaking skills during a poetry recital day.

Pupils from eight academies across South Yorkshire were invited to take part in the Sir Steve Lancashire Poetry Recital competition recently.

The competition was open to hundreds of Year 5 pupils who attend Reach4 primary academies across South Yorkshire, including Gooseacre, Hartley Brook, Byron Wood, Highgate, Carrfield, Denaby Main, Hexthorpe and Edenthorpe.

A total of 15 pupils made the final and were invited to recite their favourite poems in front of other students and staff members at Gooseacre Primary School in Thurnscoe on Thursday, December 1.

Kelsie Webster from Gooseacre won the competition with her performance of ‘The Hippopotamus’ Birthday’.

Runners up included:- Byron Wood Academy pupils Usman Bashir, Kayronna Nicke and Abdulrahman Asad, plus Chloe Jarvis from Carrfield Academy and Lucinda Rymer from Highgate Academy.

Sir Steve Lancashire, founder of the Reach4 Trust, also performed on the evening, alongside Phil Sheppard a published poet, playwright and teacher at Hexthorpe Primary School in Doncaster.

Libby Nicholas, chief executive of the Reach4 Trust, said: “The poetry recital gave our children the opportunity to recite a poem of their choice, and goes to the heart of commitment to a knowledge based curriculum.”
