Times EXCLUSIVE

POLICE officers armed with potentially deadly Taser guns are patrolling our streets.

The South Yorkshire force revealed the disturbing news this week they have trained hundreds of NON–FIREARM officers to carry one of the controversial weapons, as part of their protective equipment.

The Police, have already used them on numerous occasions across the area, including on a suicidal young mother.

Tasers use a 50,000 volt electric shock to subdue a person.

Officers say they are a safe and an effective way of gaining control of a violent incident.

Yet several international bodies including the United Nations, beg to differ.

Their committee has ruled that Tasers constitute a “form of torture” and “can even cause death”.

They have trained up more than 230 frontline officers to use the stun guns, which fire a high voltage dart.

Given the recent comments by a senior South Yorkshire officer, which we exclusively reported last week, could this be the start of putting armed police on the beat?
