Disney on Ice: Princesses and Heroes, Motorpoint Arena Sheffield, April 2012
IF you’ve ever pulled on a pair of ice skates and gingerly edged your way around the side wall of a skating rink, you’ll know how tricky it can be to avoid ending up slap bang on your derriere.
Try that while dressed as a huge crab, in full flowing robes, decked out as one of the Seven Dwarves or in full Mickey Mouse costume in front of the wide eyes of hundreds of children and the pressure is really on.
The combination of Disney On Ice has long proved a hit - favourites from the megabucks franchise for the kids, combined with a bit of graceful stuff on the ice for the adults.
The latest show is no different, bringing together a host of characters from the corporation’s various flicks down the years, sticking them in a pair of skates and getting them to whizz around a bit beneath the lights and to a full musical accompaniment.
The schmaltz is ladled on a bit thick at times, but you can’t fault the skills of the performers as they pirouette, glide and leap before our eyes.
There are some truly breathtaking ice dance routines executed in It’s A Knockout style costumes and anyone who can do that deserves the plaudits.
And although there were a few unplanned tumbles, that just encouraged the audience to cheer even louder. Still a sizzling show.
