RESIDENTS showed they had community spirit by mucking in together during a clean-up day in Swinton.

About 40 volunteer litter pickers of all ages turned out to clean the streets around the Fitzwilliam Estate.

They managed to fill two skips full of litter and unwanted household items.

Councillor Ken Wyatt, who helped out on the day, said: “It was a great turn out and was nice to see so many people getting involved.

“The place looked a whole lot better afterwards.”

Ann Harwood, secretary of Swinton Fitzwilliam Mutual TARA, said: “It’s always nice to see young people join us and it helps to teach them to take ownership in their community.”

The event was supported by the TARA, plus Rotherham Council staff, wardens and helpers from other agencies. The skips were funded by the Area Housing Panel.
